Traffic Counts

Regional Traffic Data Collections (Fall 2025/Spring 2026)

The Butte County Association of Governments (BCAG) and its vendor, National Data & Surveying Services, are currently collecting traffic data throughout Butte County.  The devices being utilized are temporary traffic data collection cameras used solely to measure average daily traffic, including vehicle volumes, speed, and classification. The cameras are not monitored live, and all data is securely stored on a private server that is not accessible to the public. They do not capture or identify facial features, license plates, or any personal information. Once the data is delivered, all footage is deleted.

Key clarifications:

  • These are temporary traffic count devices, typically deployed for approximately three days
  • The cameras are low resolution and used solely to count vehicles
  • The devices are not monitored live
  • They do not perform facial recognition or license plate recognition
  • Neither BCAG nor the local jurisdictions have access to video recordings
  • Data is collected for analysis and used only to generate anonymous, aggregated traffic count information for transportation planning purposes

Traffic count data is used by BCAG and regional partners to support roadway safety analysis, grant applications, congestion management, and long-range transportation planning.

2022/2023

BCAG completed traffic counts at 310 locations throughout Butte County for the period from Spring 2022 to Spring 2023.

The counts were three-day, 72-hour traffic hose counts collected from Tuesday through Thursday. Bi-directional data was collected for each site and was recorded in 15-minute intervals.  Peak hour and daily totals were included. Counts were not performed during special community events, holidays, rain or any such event that would alter typical traffic conditions and patterns.

BCAG acquires a consultant to perform traffic counts approximately every three or four years. Member agencies may submit a request to count additional locations, dependent on funding availability. Determination of which locations are counted is dependent on the location that will best supplement the BCAG traffic model program. Counts are listed by geographic area and alphabetized within.
