In September 2008 Governor Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 375 (SB 375), also known as the Sustainable Communities and Climate Change At of 2008, as the mechanism to implement passenger vehicle greenhouse gas reductions outlined in Assembly Bill 32.

Under SB 375, BCAG, as the region's Metropolitan Planning Organization, has been designated by the state to prepare the area's "Sustainable Communities Strategy" (SCS) as an additional element of the 2012 Regional Transportation Plan.  The SCS will be the forecasted development pattern for the region, which, when integrated into with the transportation network, and other transportation measures and policies, will meet the passenger vehicle greenhouse gas reduction target for the area.

Research

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is working with researchers at the University of California at Irvine and Davis to identify the impacts on vehicle use and greenhouse gas emissions of key transportation and land use policies based on the scientific literature.  Click here to visit CARBs website and view the results of this research.

BCAG hosted 4 public workshops in early August 2011 to present the preliminary draft 2012 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and to inform and educate the public as to what the SCS consists of, the issues and policies choices, and to solicit comments prior to its development.
