The Economic Census profiles American business every 5 years, from the national to the local level.

2007 Economic Census forms were sent to more than 4 million businesses in November and December 2007, asking for information about business activity during the calendar year 2007. The forms were due back February 12, 2008. Results will be published during 2009 and 2010.

Many very small businesses were not sent a form, and thus are not required to report.

Businesses that did receive a form are required by law (Title 13 of the U.S. Code) to complete and return it.
